10/22/2010 Writing fiction is magic for me. Blank page/screen, imagination flying free. I don’t discount the hard work of editing and listening to my characters as they struggle and celebrate what’s happening to them. Powerful writing requires editing. No matter how much you love a particular turn of the phrase, sometimes it doesn’t fit and you have to take it out. It may cut you to the quick as the author, but the character, the story is king. Anytime a reader is reminded there’s an author, your story flails. What you want is that total immersion in the other world, you want your reader to be there, and forget that a writer has created the place and time that are peopled so vividly.
